Uses Smart Technology to automatically adjust ActiveLED® lighting levels in an ocupancy zone or lighting network based upon ambient light readings where natural daylight can also be used to illuminate the room or public space
LightSpace® Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) takes ambient light level and power management to the next level of automation.
ALS is designed to be connected to ActiveLED C-Series power supplies and digitally control one or many ActiveLED lighting fixtures in a lighting network, allowing the automatic adjustment of ambient light levels to suit occupancy needs and available natural daylight, while saving energy.
In D2D (Dusk-to-Dawn) mode the ALS becomes an Astronomical Twilight Detector and will turn the attached ActiveLED lighting fixtures off and on at the beginning and end of each day, while automatically adjusting for the seasons.
ActiveLED®Occupancy Zone / Lighting "Network"
A group of controlled ActiveLED light fixtures can be interconnected to form an occupancy zone / lighting "network" and the number of ActiveLED lighting fixtures that can be controlled from a single Ambient Light Sensor is virtually limitless.
As the level of natural daylight entering a room or facility fluctuates (morning through afternoon, cloudy or clear sky, for example), the ALS automatically adjusts the light level of the ActiveLED light fixtures to maintain a consistent ambient light level.
Each interconnected LED fixture / power supply relays the ALS settings to the next connected fixture via a 4-wire RJ11 / RJ12 communications cable, giving unlimited flexibility in managing the defined ActiveLED lighting occupancy zone or ighting "network".
The Ambient Light Sensor can be used in "stand-alone" mode or can be networked with one or many LightSpace Managers to provide even greater automatic control of the occupancy zone, including motion sensing and automatic dimming based on occupancy needs as well as available natural daylight. Deploying at least one LSM with an ALS is recommended.
The following diagram is one example of a conference room with a large natural daylight window where ambient light levels and motion sensing are automatically adjusted by an Ambient Light Sensor in concert with a LightSpace Manager that are controlling and managing the lighting "network" or occupancy zone.
Depending upon the size and shape of the defined space and the number of entry and exit points, one Ambient Light Sensor can be combined with up to 10 (ten) separate LSMs and/or motion / occupancy sensors in designing the lighting zone to provide maximum energy savings. The perceived light level can be precisely adjusted from 0 to 100% in 2% increments to suit the particular requirements of the occupancy zone.
ALS Programmability
Ambient Light Sensor is programmable to meet most lighting requirements via its easy-to-use user interface.
The required maximum and minum ambient light levels can be programmed to suit local preferences and so define the operating range of the ALS. Should the light levels in the room need to be temporarily changed (dim down for a PowerPoint presentation, for example), these settings can be overridden and suitably adjusted from the control panel of the ALS, or even from a LSM attached to the same lighting network (recommended).
Ambient Light Sensor Overview
The Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) has a light sensor, a 3-button capacitive touch interface and a LED numerical display. It will be connected to an ActiveLED power supply, or the first in a string of power supplies, to automatically control the brightness of the attached LED lighting fixtures that form an occupancy zone.
The ALS should only be directly connected to an ActiveLED light fixture or power supply when it is the sole controller device. The ALS can also be connected with one or more LightSpace Managers or Motion-Only Sensors. In this configuration only one Ambient Light Sensor should be used in the control group and it should only be used as a slave to the master LSM.
Ambient Light Sensor Operating Modes
The ALS has five operating modes, which may be selected by pressing the left touch button, as follows:

CAL (Calibration) |
Calibration Mode is the same as Auto Mode except the ALS displays its current light level reading (calibration). Calibration mode is also helpful when initially programming (calibrating) the ALS using its built-in light meter to provide the desired High and Low ambient light levels. |
D2D (Dusk/Dawn) |
In D2D (Dusk-to-Dawn) mode the ALS becomes an Astronomical Twilight Detector and will turn the attached ActiveLED lighting fixtures off and on at the beginning and end of each day, while automatically adjusting for the seasons. |
On | On Mode takes the ALS out of Automatic Mode and allows the light levels to be manually adjusted up or down in 2% increments from 0 to 100% using the capacitive touch buttons. |
Off | Turns the attached ActiveLED lights off (or down to the configured minimum light level), while the background of the ALS is lit to facilitate locating it in low ambient light levels. |
The Calibration mode (CAL) in combination with the Dusk-to-Dawn mode (D2D) is used to determine the desired light levels at the end and beginning of each day to turn the attached ActiveLED light fixtures on and off respectively. Use the light levels displayed in Calibration mode at the end and beginning of each day (dusk and dawn) to configure the light levels in D2D mode and then select D2D mode to activate this Ambient Light Sensor functionality.

The ActiveLED system architecture is unique in its efficiency, design and the way the ActiveLED Elements are driven. Combining this architecture with a LightSpace Ambient Light Sensor provides additional energy savings that are exponential to the reduced light level. Example One: An ActiveLED 104 Watt High Bay Strip with the brightness dimmed down to brightness level 50, then the total power consumption of that fixture is about 16.64 Watt (16% of 104 Watt) at this brightness level of 50. Example Two: An ActiveLED 104 Watt High Bay Strip with the brightness dimmed down to brightness level 30, then the total power consumption of that fixture is a mere 5.2 Watt (5% of 104 Watt) at this brightness level of 30. This same chart and percentages not only apply to any of our lighting fixtures with the external dimming controls, including the Rotary Digital Dimmer and the LightSpace Manager, but also to any pre-programmed ActiveLED fixture. Although the light output of ActiveLED fixtures can be dimmed in 2% increments, the chart on the left accurately portrays the percentage power consumption for each increment of 10. |

ActiveLED® Communication Cables for the Digital LightSpace ALS
The LightSpace ALS connects to an ActiveLED power supply as per the EDSaP wiring specification, using either standard RJ12 6-wire "flat ribbon" or UTP cable using RJ-12 male connectors (UTP recommended).
Interconnect each ActiveLED lighting fixture to provide a lighting network / occupancy zone as per the EDSaP wiring specification, using either Standard RJ-11 / RJ12 (4-wire) "flat ribbon" or UTP cabling (UTP recommended).
NOTE: Cables not included in the price of the LightSpace ALS.
