An optional Surge Protection Device designed specifically to protect ActiveLED® light fixtures or power supplies from high voltage and / or high-amperage electrical surges associated with back EMF from ballast-based light fixtures, electric motors, contactors and other inductive loads.
The SPD may be installed in the Junction Box of any ActiveLED light fixture and is wired between the main AC line feed and the AC connection to the light fixture.
The SPD is considered to be a sacrificial or disposable device in that any potentially harmful electrical surges may cause the low-cost SPD to fail, thereby protecting the valuable ActiveLED fixture.
The SPD has a small status LED that is visible through the end-cap. If this LED is illuminated it signifies that AC power is connected and the SPD is functioning correctly.
If the LED is not illuminated it signifies that either AC power is not connected or the SPD has "sacrificed" itself in protecting the higher-value light fixture from a power surge. If the SPD has performed correctly and has protected an ActiveLED light fixture from an electrical surge, the SPD will need to be replaced.
Surge Protection Device installed in an ActiveLED Street Light
The example below shows the SPD installed inside the Junction Box of an ActiveLED Street Light. The SPD is small enough to be installed in the Junction Box of most ActiveLED outdoor light fixtures. Alternatively the SPD can be installed in the hand-hole at the base of the pole for easy access.
When all of the wire connections have been correctly and securely made, the wiring is carefully tucked inside the junction box along with the SPD and the cover plate replaced. The SPD is inside an insulated sleeve and the status LED is visible through the end cap, the LED is illuminated when AC power is applied and the SPD is fully functional. If power is applied and the LED is not illuminated, this indicates that the SPD has done its job in protecting the higher-value light fixture from a high-energy surge and needs to be replaced.
For added convenience, the SPD could just as easily be installed inside the access panel at the base of the mounting pole supporting the street light.
There is no warranty on this Surge Protector as it is a consumable part and is considered to be a sacrificial or disposable device. Effective May 1st 2017, when a SPD is ordered separately with applicable ActiveLED fixtures, the warranty is extended by an additional two years, from 10 to 12 years.ActiveLED® SPD-3 Surge Protector Part Number:00-27-0742-0000.
