Building Management System Adapter™ (BMSA) for ActiveLED® Lighting Systems (REPLACED BY VERSION 2)

  • Building Management System Adapter™ (BMSA)
    - A low voltage intelligent adapter that links central Building Management Systems (BMS) to ActiveLED® lighting systems

  • Controls one or many ActiveLED® lighting fixtures in a lighting zone with precise digital dimming from 0 (Off) to 100% in 2% increments

  • Each BMS Adapter is powered by the single ActiveLED lighting fixture to which it is directly connected

  • The number of ActiveLED lights that can be controlled from one BMSA and/or LightSpace Manager is virtually limitless - each interconnected ActiveLED fixture regenerates the Manager signals to the next fixture in the chain

  • Standard 6-wire flat ribbon or UTP cable connection to an ActiveLED power supply using RJ-12 male connectors

  • Standard 4-wire flat ribbon or UTP cabling (RJ-11 / RJ12) interconnects each ActiveLED lighting fixture providing a lighting network / occupancy zone of controllable / manageable lights

  • Description of the BMSA Interface / Pin-outs

    Pins 1 & 2
Input from a 3rd party BMS (2-wire "fluorescent" system) for controlling dimming functionality of the ActiveLED fixtures based on sensed voltage (0 thru 10 V).

    Pins 4 & 5
The 3rd party BMS takes control of the ActiveLED lighting system (regardless of whether a LightSpace Manager is present or not) by providing a dry contact between pins 4 & 5 of the BMSA. It then relinquishes control back to the LSM by removing the dry contact from pins 4 & 5.

    Pins 7 & 8
Output from the ActiveLED fixture attached to the BMSA indicating that AC power is present or not at the fixture.

    Pins 3, 6 & 9
For attaching wiring shielding as required

  • Implement optional Occupancy Sensors and/or Dimmig Controls to save even more energy.
Satisfies the occupancy zone requirements of 2006 IECC when combined with Ringdale Occupancy Sensors

Building Management System Adapter™ (BMSA) - A low voltage intelligent adapter that links central Building Management Systems to ActiveLED® lighting systems

Cost effective solution that provides two levels of lighting management. The ActiveLED lighting management system can be implemented and controlled at the local level, while a third party BMS central management system is able to override the local settings and take control as needed.

Replaced by 00-27-0631-0000 BMSA V2
With the BMS Adapter, ActiveLED® lighting systems can be easily and cost effectively integrated into existing Building Management Systems (BMS) from third-party BMS companies like Johnson Controls, Hubbell, Siemens, Hirsch and others.

The ActiveLED BMS Adapter takes the light level input set by the BMS building management system (0V through 10V) and digitally communicates the resultant light level to the ActiveLED lighting system using the ActiveLED digital protocol.

Example of Dual Management of a Lighting Zone

A group of ActiveLED light fixtures are interconnected to form an ActiveLED occupancy zone / lighting "network" that needs to be managed by the third party BMS Manager and / or the ActiveLED LightSpace® Manager (LSM).

A lighting zone of ActiveLED lighting fixtures in an office building is managed between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM by the users via the LightSpace Manager (LSM). This includes setting maximum light levels, dimming (0 through 100%) and motion-sensing levels based upon the working environment.

At 6.01 PM the Central Business Management System (BMS) overrides these user-defined settings and dims all light fixtures down to the corporate standard of 50%.
At 6:45 the BMS will further dim the lights down to say 24%, or maybe to off for the duration of the night.
At 8:00 AM the 3rd party BMS then relinquishes control of the lighting zone back to the ActiveLED LSM.
The ActiveLED BMS Adapter manages the two separate interfaces as described above and is designed to relinquish lighting management from the ActiveLED LSM to the BMS central manager - when the BMS provides a dry contact between pins 4 & 5 on the BMSA - and switch back to the ActiveLED system when the BMS is inactive.

Overview of a BMS Adapter in an Occupancy Zone / "Network"

The number of ActiveLED lighting fixtures that can be managed from a single ActiveLED BMS Adapter and/or LightSpace Manager is virtually limitless.
Each interconnected LED fixture repeats the Manager settings to the next connected LED fixture, giving unlimited flexibility in managing a defined ActiveLED lighting occupancy zone or lighting "network".

LightSpace Manager is connected to the COM-1 port of the BMS Adapter using a 6-conductor flat ribbon cable.

The first ActiveLED light fixture in a lighting zone is connected to the COM-2 port of the BMS Adapter using a second 6-conductor flat ribbon cable.

The following diagram is just one example of a building or room with three entrances and three LightSpace Managers sharing control of the lighting "network" or occupancy zone with a third party Central Business Management System (BMS).
In this example the ActiveLED BMS Adapter facilitates the managing of the zone by either the third party BMS system or the ActiveLED system.

BMS communication wiring diagram

Although this example has dual management of the lighting zone between ActiveLED and a third-party BMS, the same results can be achieved without a LSM or with one or many LSM units. The BMS Adapter provides the interconnectivity between the ActiveLED lighting zone and the third-party BMS central building management system.

Programmability & Lighting Levels

The LightSpace Manager is programmable to meet most lighting requirements via its easy-to-use user interface.
Light levels (dimming) can be programmed to suit local preferences in 2% increments, from 0 (off) to 100%.
The inactivity triggering of the occupancy sensor can be programmed in one minute increments from 1 to 540 minutes (9 hours), after which time it will dim the lights down to the pre-programmed level.
The sensor can then be programmed in one minute increments to further reduce the lighting to zero, or a pre-defined low lighting level, after an additional 1 to 540 minutes.

The BMS Adapter provides the identical dimming capabilities as the LSM for the ActiveLED fixtures (2% increments) by "adapting" the sensed voltage from the 3rd party BMS on pins 1 & 2 to the ActiveLED architecture. The following table charts the sensed voltage and the corresponding ActiveLED light levels in increments of 10. The actual light levels will increase in 50 increments of 2%, the same increments that the LightSpace Manager (LSM) controls the ActiveLED fixtures.

The ActiveLED system architecture is unique in its efficiency, design and the way the ActiveLED Elements are driven. This chart accurately details the substantial energy savings that can be achieved when deploying a manageable ActiveLED lighting network.

Combining this architecture with a LightSpace™ Appliance, including the LightSpace Manager-IR, provides additional energy savings that are somewhat exponential to the reduced light level.

Example One:
An ActiveLED High Bay Strip with 104 watts total fixture (96 watts of LEDs) with the brightness dimmed down to brightness level 50, then the total power consumption of that fixture is 16.64 watts (16% of 104 watts) at this brightness level of 50.

Example Two:
An ActiveLED High Bay Strip with 104 watts total fixture (96 watts of LEDs) with the brightness dimmed down to brightness level 30, then the total power consumption of that fixture is a mere 5.2 watts (5% of 104 watts) at this brightness level of 30.

This same chart and percentages not only apply to any of our lighting fixtures with the external dimming controls, including the Rotary Digital Dimmer and the LightSpace Manager, but also to any pre-programmed ActiveLED fixture.

Although the light output of ActiveLED fixtures can be dimmed in 2% increments, the chart on the left accurately portrays the percentage power consumption for each incremental brightness setting of 10.
